Who Is Tom Scoble?
Tom Scoble is a cannabis cultivation expert, entrepreneur, and educator who has dedicated his life to building sustainable businesses rooted in nature. As founder of Mother Magnolia Cultivation, Tom shares decades of hands-on growing experience through consulting programs, online courses, and his role as the High Times Grow Tips columnist. But to understand who Tom is today, you have to trace his journey—from growing up in Yosemite, where his love for the natural world was forged, to creating one of Oregon’s pioneering plant medicine farms, to building educational resources that empower growers worldwide.
Tom Scoble's Background
Tom Scoble’s entrepreneurial spirit was forged in the wilderness. Growing up in Yosemite National Park, where his father managed the Ansel Adams Gallery, Tom spent his formative years surrounded by the raw beauty that inspired America’s greatest nature photographers.
Countless childhood hours backpacking through John Muir’s High Sierra didn’t just build character—they planted an unshakeable reverence for the natural world that would become the driving force behind every venture he would create. This deep connection to nature fused seamlessly with Tom’s innate drive to build and create.
From founding his first business at 14 to launching seven enterprises over nearly three decades, he has consistently applied an entrepreneur’s vision to cultivation in all its forms—whether nurturing plants, building companies, writing songs, or crafting videos. His philosophy is simple: just as nature transforms seed into forest, great businesses grow from understanding the fundamental conditions needed for life to flourish.
Tom’s journey from landscape designer to co-founder of Pasadena’s longest-running CrossFit gym reveals his ability to cultivate community wherever he plants roots. But it was his 2015 move to Oregon’s Willamette Valley that truly aligned his entrepreneurial ambitions with his environmental values. There, he founded Mother Magnolia Cannabis Co., one of the state’s pioneering plant medicine farms, transforming 32 acres into a laboratory for sustainable growing practices.
Working closely with a soil scientist in Corvallis, Tom spent years perfecting the organic nutrient blends and feeding systems that would eventually bring about a new fertilizer blend he named Flowerbird; a testament to his belief that the best innovations emerge from patient observation of natural processes.
His latest venture, Mother Magnolia Cultivation, brings this philosophy full circle, offering online courses that teach others to cultivate not just cannabis, but a deeper understanding of the symbiotic relationship between human ambition and natural wisdom.
When not tending his farm or building his businesses, Tom can be found chasing twilight on golf courses, carving through powder on mountain slopes, writing songs, or recharging on Hawaiian beaches—always returning to the natural environments that continue to fuel his creative and entrepreneurial fire.
